"One of the most traditional and loved grapes of Northern Italy, Nebbiolo is responsible for much of wine coming out of the Piedmont region. It is the grape used in both Barolo and Barbaresco. With a deep, inky purple colour and massive tannins in its youth, this varietal has traditionally been one to lay down for a decade or two before opening it up! With the help of modern technology and oenology, wine makers throughout Italy have learned how to coerce the grape into a less tannic state at a young age, which lead to plenty of great wines that one could afford to pick up off the shelf and open that night. With complexity in its nature, this wine hints of berries, tar, cigar box, and an aroma you must smell to believe. Caution though, even though this wine is more drinkable at a young age than it was, it is still relatively acidic and has some bite to it! " |
