"Syrah, or Shiraz as it's known in many parts of the world, originated in the Rhone region of Southern France and has since been a very integral part of the wine industry. Not only is it the master grape in Rhone blends, but up until very recently, Bordeaux wine makers would blend in a select amount of syrah during bad years to ""smooth"" out the wine. It is a wine capable of aging decades when well made and in recent times with new techniques, they are able to coerce the grape into a less tannic version that is suitable and quite delicious when drank young. Always made into a dry red wine, it can be found as its own wine or blended with other various grapes. Besides the classic Southern Rhone blend of adding in Grenache and Mouvedre in to it, in Australia, the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon is quite remarkable. It can be powerful and full-bodied, or soft, subtle, and barely a medium bodied wine. Depending on where it is grown and who is producing it, various aromas and taste spring to mind over the years. Berries, chocolate, coffee, and especially at times pepper (depending on the age of the vines)." |
