How to Make a Tasty Cheeseboard at Home
Need a quick and easy appetizer to serve your guests at home? Try this DIY cheeseboard setup, designed by Wally’s cheese experts with delicious, crowd-pleasing ingredients which are all available at our cheese counter.
Step 1: Pick your base
Every cheeseboard needs crackers, pita chips, or a baguette to serve as a foundation for assorted cheeses and toppings. We love ZaZa Pita Chips for our boards, which are seasoned with a custom za’atar spice blend. The spices lend a low-acid, herbaceous tone to the chips, with olive oil and lemon notes that brighten the flavors, making them a perfect base for fresh, flavorful cheeses.
Step 2: Select your cheeses
The Wally’s experts have the perfect recommendations to buy at our cheese counter and bring home to serve alongside za’atar chips, toasted baguette, or even simple crackers.
- Formaggio di Fossa di Sogliano DOP: Although this is technically a pecorino cheese, it’s unlike any you’ve had before. The name translates to “trench cheese” because it’s buried in underground pits, where it ages and takes on unique and intense flavors. It’s crumbly and fresh, with rich earthy notes, and a delicious pairing for za’atar seasoning.
- La Tur: This is a classic soft cheese of Italy, coming from Piedmont in Northern Italy. It has a soft rind and a super creamy middle, which oozes like a lava cake when at room temperature. The cheese is made from a mix of three milks: sheep, goat, and cow. Blending the milks helps balance the tanginess of goat milk or the richness of cow milk to create a perfect harmony. A rich, creamy cheese like La Tur is excellent with bubbly drinks, such as sparkling wine, and makes a perfect spread for crunchy chips.
- Australian Sheep & Goat Feta: This young, fresh cheese is marinated in seasoned oil, giving it a rich, briny quality that is a perfect complement to the sharp acidity of the cheese. Since it’s a blend of sheep and goat milk, the flavors are fresh and bright. And a rich, buttery texture makes it perfect for za’atar spices and any other crackers you have on hand. Bonus: the oil makes a great drizzle on salads or other dishes!
Step 3: Make your cocktail
Since the chips, crackers, and cheeses are contributing a variety of flavors, we recommend serving a drink that’s simple and refreshing, and bubbles are a plus! ZaZa Pita Chips and the assorted cheeses above have a range of herbaceous notes, so a classic Gin & Tonic is a great option to complement the flavors. Add a sprig of rosemary or lime to elevate the herbal notes — and enjoy!
